Looking After Your Posture

When I was a little girl, I was very aware of my posture. Mostly because my mother used to say, "Sit up straight or you'll look like you're ninety before you're twenty."
It worked. I also read a book by Judy Blume called Deenie, about a girl who had to wear a back brace through high school to correct her posture that really stayed with me.

Anyway, I work at a desk and often find myself slouching or with a sore back. I try to practice good desk ergonomics and have found that a good chair is a vital piece of equipment. If I foind myself slouching, I try to immediately correct it and do stretching exercises whenever I can.

If you want to improve your posture, here are a few tips:
-Practice yoga. Yoga helps you lengthen your body including your spine through exercises. You don't have to turn into a pretzel to practice hatha yoga. Some very simple moves can help you improve your posture and can even help you with back pain. Cat stretches help me almost without fail after a day at my desk without much of a break.

-Pilates. Pilates is a great way to improve your posture. Pilates results in longer, leaner muscles and can make a difference to your posture as well.

Exercise can do wonders for your back. If you have a problem with lower back pain, exercises can help tremendously. If you have problems with upper back pains or poor posture, weight training, shoulder presses and tai chi can also help.

If you're worried about your back health, many people recommend seeing a chiropractor for a back adjustment as well.
