Should You Random Drug Test Your Teen?

Parenting is the toughest gig in the world and today kids seem to be growing up ultra fast. How do parents ensure that their kids are healthy and safe? Health starts at home and awareness is something we can share with our kids about what they eat and drink and fill their lives with. A healthy foundation can go a long way in life.

In terms of drugs and teenagers, it's important to let your child know that you won't be an ostrich and stick your head in the sand where they're concerned. Communicate with your kids and know who their friends are. Give them the tools to make decisions instead of simply following the crowd and succumbing to peer pressure.

If necessary, tell your teens that if they are caught with drugs even once, they'll be subjected to random drug testing with consequences if results indicate drug use.

Very good suggestions... couldn't agree more.

It's important for everyone to remember that good parenting doesn't assure the prevention of substance misuse.

1. It takes an average of 3.5 years for parents to recognized a problem.
2. Random drug testing is currently the best method of deterence and detection.
3. Detection is required to provide treatment. Rarely, if ever, does an abuser come forward on their own.
